This small course has a main goal to teach you how to use a node-based video editor Fusion from Blackmagic Design team to create abstract video background for your data science websites. We begin with learning Fusion basics and on every further steps we will complete some parts of our final video background. This course targets on beginner users of Fusion and to those who are unfamiliar with this video editor at all. After the course you will have strong foundation of how Fusion works and how to use its tools to create your own unique video background for your website. The techniques we will cover also can be apply to create different variety of abstract backgrounds. So, let's get started!

Overview

Project Introduction

This small course has a main goal to teach you how to use a node-based video editor Fusion from Blackmagic Design team to create abstract video background for your data science websites. We begin with learning Fusion basics and on every further steps we will complete some parts of our final video background. This course targets on beginner users of Fusion and to those who are unfamiliar with this video editor at all. After the course you will have strong foundation of how Fusion works and how to use its tools to create your own unique video background for your website. The techniques we will cover also can be apply to create different variety of abstract backgrounds.

What are the requirements?

There're no special requirements for viewers, but there are few moments, which helps you to move further and learn the software and techniques faster and efficient. Here they are:

  • Previous experience with motion design and video editing
  • Understanding of node-base workflow
  • Basic expressions writing or scripting

Also, be sure your hardware is up-to-date, because otherwise your may feel some limitations in your work and with your final video background output resolution. It will be good if you have a graphic tablet as an input device, because it will make your work faster and efficient, but a mouse is fine also.

What is the target audience?

Everybody, who wants to understand how to create animated video backgrounds for websites are welcome to watch this course. Also those, who wants to learn more about:

  • Motion design
  • Creation of custom video animations for web
  • Node-based video editing workflow

Project Outline

Session 1: Introduction to BMD Fusion

We will cover: what is Fusion, how to navigate inside its workspace, what is node-based workflow and hot to use nodes to create your 2D composition. Main topics will be:

  • What is Fusion and where it can be used?
  • UI and navigation inside Fusion
  • Node-based workflow: What is it and hot it works?

Session 2: Practice in 2D compositing

It will be a practice session, where we will see how we can use a node-based workflow to create the final video animation. Also we will learn a lot of different and useful nodes.

  • Principles of 2D compositing with Nodes
  • Small practice with creation our first animated video

Session 3: Real 3D space in Fusion

One of the powerful side of Fusion is native build-in 3D space. You don't need some special plug-ins to use it and to work inside it. So, we will find out in this session:

  • 3D navigation and 3D tools
  • Principles of 3D compositing

Session 4: Work with materials in 3D space

We will continue our introduction to 3D space with Fusion and talk about materials or shaders. We will cover how to create, assign and modify them to imitate different surfaces inside Fusion. Our main topic here will be:

  • What are 3D materials?
  • How to create and modify them
  • Using textures to create more complicated materilas

Session 5: Let's light and displace something

Let's finish our basic learning about 3D space in Fusion. And the last topics here will be lights and lighting in 3D space and also we will cover one more interesting tool in Fusion, which calls Displacement. And the topics are:

  • Different type of 3D lights
  • Lights parameters and shadows generation
  • Displacement methods for modifying 3D surfaces

Session 6: Working with Text in Fusion

Now it's a time to cover some more interesting and productive nodes/tools/techniques for growing up our experience with Fusion. We will find out how a Text tools works inside Fusion and see how Modifiers allow us to change a text behavior during animation. And the topics are:

  • Text+ node in Fusion
  • Working with text Modifiers

Session 7: Particles and effects

One of the strongest side of Fusion is particles system. And this session will be devoted to particles and how to use them in Fusion. Particles will be important part of our final scene\project setup, so, we have to understand how they behave and how to setup them the way we need. We will talk about:

  • 2D and 3D particles
  • Particles emitter
  • Particles collisions
  • Particles forces

Session 8: Final project creation (part 1)

Now we had all knowledge to start and finish out final project - Video animated background for a data science website! So, let's work on it now. We will learn:

  • How to use mood board to get some inspiration from
  • How to create stylized landscape lake element as a main part of our project
  • How to create particles to create structures indication
  • Work with Duplicate tool to create repeated animation loops

Session 9: Final project creation (part 2)

We continue with final project creation... And also we will study different approaches to create details for our video animation. We will talk about:

  • Creating wired renders
  • Working with Instancing tools in Fusion
  • Polishing our final video animation
  • Rendering final video animation in different quality (preview, final)
