Watch this video to set up your stream or follow the guide below.

step 1

Download OBS and run the installation.

Setup OBS software on

step 2

Once installation has finished, run OBS and you should see this screen

Setup OBS software on

You can see here we have the two control buttons and two tabs, scene and sources. A scene is a mashup of sources. A source can be a video camera, desktop, or even a single window. We will show you how to add sources, but first we are going to set some basic settings. So start by clicking the 'Settings' button

step 3

Click on the 'Stream' tab. You don't need to worry about all the settings here - we will go through the most important ones now, you can leave the other settings as they are.

Setup OBS software on

Here are the settings you need to enter on this page:
Stream Type: Select 'Custom Streaming Server' option from the dropdown
URL: Copy the FMS url from your channel dashboard settings.
Stream key: Enter your stream key, which you can find on your Dashboard under Channel Settings.

step 4

We recommend you do a speedtest using and set your video bit rate to a minimum (75% of your upload speed or maximum 2000).

Then navigate to 'Output'. Here we will just make these changes:
Video Bitrate: 2000kbps
Audio Bitrate: 64kbps

Setup OBS software on

If you stream at more than 2.0mbps your stream may be terminated automatically.

step 5

Then navigate to 'Video'. Here we will just make these changes:
1. Set your base resolution in OBS exactly to your desktop native resolution.
2. Divide your first resolution size by the second one, e.g. 1920 divided by 1080 gives 1.7777 or 2560/1600 = 1.6 If you get 1.7777, set downscale resolution size to 1920 * 1080. If you get 1.6 set it 1280 * 800
3. FPS: 20. It is device specific, so you can test between 10-30.

Setup OBS software on

step 6

Exit the settings, then right click on the 'plus button' in the sources box and add 'Display capture'. If you want to also show your face in a webcam, click on 'plus button' and add 'video capture device'. Select under device your webcam and click ok.

Setup OBS software on

step 7

Press 'Start Streaming' and you should see something like this, you are streaming! Check your streaming profile on to see if you are live. If you see and hear your stream YOU ARE LIVE! Pause your stream on to prevent echo, but still follow the chat.

Run a 5mins stream test and check if:

  1. It plays smoothly for you
  2. If it's buffering
  3. If audio is loud enough
  4. If the livestream breaks

common mistakes/problems

Problem: Frequent disconnections even the recommended video bit rate is used. OBS has 2 output modes simple and advanced which is the first option you see in the output tab. Sometimes the video bit rate entered in simple may be different from what you have when you change it to advanced. Please before you can switch between modes you need to stop streaming temporarily.

Solution: Make sure the video bitrate, custom buffer size set in simple and advanced mode are the same.

Problem: Screen is blurry?

Solution: Go to video tab and Set your FPS to 10.

Problem: Having Dropped frames.

Solution: You need to do a speedtest using and compare the result of your upload speed with your video bitrate. The video bit rate should not be more than your upload speed.

Problem: Sources not properly arranged.

Solution: If it’s not covering fullscreen try to set it to fit to display. To do this, right click on the added display source then select Transformation, then fit display to screen.

Sources available for mac:

  • Monitor Capture: this option allows you to capture the entire monitor so everyone can see your desktop with this option. To add this Open OBS and Right Click on Sources => Select Add => Select Monitor Capture => From the pop out box select the monitor you want to display from the list. Then click on ok.
  • Windows capture: this option allows you to add specific windows like your IDE, browsers and terminal. This way you control what is being displayed to the viewers. To add this Open OBS and Right Click on Sources => Select Add => Select Windows Capture => From the pop out box select the windows you want to display from the list. Then click on ok.
  • Audio Capture: this is common with mac as you need to redirect audio output/Input to OBS depending on use. Output is for music/pc audio while input can be used when the mic is not detected by default.
  • Video Capture: This allows you to add your webcam so the viewers see you live. To add this Open OBS and Right Click on Sources => Select Add => Select Video Capture Device => A popup will appear and click ok in that.

Either way if you are concerned about displaying confidential information the best option is the windows capture.

Problem: Sound not working.

Solution: Install Soundflower or Wavetap after which you will be required to restart your Mac. For El Capitan users you will need to download the signed version of soundflower here

  • Next open OBS go to settings then the audio tab and select desktop audio device as Soundflower - 2ch
  • Next add a new source capture audio output and select Soundflower 2ch for from the pop out box.
  • Lastly go to the Mac audio settings and set your output audio device as Soundflower.
