Watching this project can give you enough impetus to get your hands dirty and begin creating a website like Tinder, Badoo, or OkCupid. I will cover all the details of creating your own dating website—from scratch to a completely functional application.

Overview

I will explain the ins and outs of using Node.js and other associated technologies like MongoDB and React.js to confidently develop a powerful dating app.

Ultimately, with the skills acquired in this project, you can extrapolate the features of the dating app or develop other web applications altogether—it all depends on your ability to stretch beyond your limits.

I will guide you through the entire process of application development:

  • On the backend, you’ll learn about developing REST-like API with authentication features as well as implementing and integrating file storage and database features.
  • On the frontend, you’ll learn about creating a wonderful visual design for a web application.

What are the requirements?

To accelerate your learning in this dating web app project, you need to have basic knowledge of the following technologies:

What will you learn after finishing this project?

  • Registering and authenticating users on a web application
  • Storing data
  • Creating an algorithm that matches people’s profiles
  • Uploading files to databases
  • Implementing real-time chatting features
  • Building React components
  • …and many more!

Who is the target audience?

  • Do you want to build a dating website from scratch and take part in the current social media revolution?
  • Do you want to understand how to develop applications from end-to-end?
  • Do you want to learn how to use the ubiquitous JavaScript programming language beyond its normal uses?
  • Do you want to learn new stuff?

Then, this project tutorial is what you need to learn the important skills to bring your killer, Tinder-competing website idea to life.

Project Outline

Session 1: Setting-up the environment

  • Discussing the architecture of the dating app.
  • Setting up the initial environment for developing the app, which includes Node.js, MongoDB, React.js, Webpack 3, and many more.
  • Creating the basic file structure for both the frontend and the backend. It’s what we’ll be using throughout the project.

Session 2: Creating first pages and basic API endpoints

  • Creating a simple homepage and adding registration and login screens.
  • Developing the few first React.js components and plug-in a package called “react-router” for enabling URL routing to our web application.
  • Creating the first API endpoints for registering and authenticating users without a database.

Session 3: Creating profile pages and MongoDB

  • Connecting the API to use MongoDB for storing users’ information.
  • Creating a User schema with Mongoose for MongoDB, and creating user profile pages.
  • Consequently, our potential users will be able to sign up, login, update settings, and check other users’ profiles (OkCupid here we come!).

Session 4: Implementing authentication using Passport.js

Implementing JWT authentication using Passport.js for allowing identification of users (This topic is covered in several parts).

  • Session 4.1: Creating the Authentication
  • Session 4.2: Connect user model with /register API, Add /Regiter API endpoint, Create UserProfile screen and Create /me route
  • Session 4.3: Extracting the user data from JWS tokens

Session 5: Creating a profile page

In this session we are going to create a profile page which is going to display some basic information of one particular user. We will store the information from user on the client side.

Session 6: Adding registration and refactoring features

Adding registration capabilities to the app and including refactoring to the React.js code to optimize future processes.

  • Session 6.1: Implementing the registration stage
  • Session 6.2: Registration and refactoring

Session 7: Including ability of users to work with others

  • Adding features that list users and show their profile pages to each other;
  • Implementing “upvote/downvote” feature that tracks how users like each other—just like the dating websites do it.

Session 8: Incorporating a matching algorithm

  • Designing and implementing a simple matching algorithm to allow people to easily find each other—that’s the whole basis of a dating application, right?
  • Creating UI to allow users to interact with each other.

Session 9: Adding WebSockets using socket.io

  • Adding basic WebSockets support to the dating app using the socket.io package on the backend. WebSockets will enable users to instantly communicate with each other.
  • Adding new React.js components for UI on the frontend.
