Big Data Introduction

Big Data is an umbrella term that covers all the strategies, technologies and methodologies to gather, process large datasets. Big data is widely used by almost every big company. Since the internet is growing at a rapid pace, big companies are capturing tons of data on a daily basis. Different methodologies and algorithms are used to make sense out of the data.

There are a lot of challenges when it comes to handling big data. Big data is all about large datasets and usage of technologies and computing strategies that work well for the large datasets. In the end, it is used to find a connection in the pool of complex data with the help of conventional methods.

History of Big Data

The history of big data dates back to the 7000 years ago. The major usage of big data occurred in the year of 1937 when Franklin D.Roosevelt’s administration in the USA worked on a project which launched the U.S. government on its most ambitious data-gathering project ever. The Social Security Act enabled the government to gather the records of 3 million employers and 26 million Americans. To make everything work properly, the contract was awarded to IBM. IBM went forward and developed the punch-card machine.

Other key instances of history where BigData was a major part of the World War II. The first data-processing machine appears during the time which was used to break Nazi code. The device was named Colossus.

Fast forward to the 21st century, the term “Big Data” was first coined by Roger Mougalas. He also coined the term, “Web 2.0”. Yahoo known as Hadoop develops the first technology that revolutionized how Big Data is managed. It utilized the popular Google’s MapReduce. These two technologies enabled easy World Wide Web indexing and managed to crunch huge amount of data.
